Markenzy Cesar is a painter who was born in Haiti. He has lived in the United States since 1987. In 1993, he moved from Long Island, New York, to Buffalo to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Cesar came to feel  a connection to the region and has built a life in western New York. Cesar is married with two daughters.

Artist statement: Developed during a solitary childhood in Haiti, my artistic practice is driven by an obsession with looking closely. I find wonder at both ends of the spectrum: the microscopic patterns of daily life and the grand, extraordinary moments of human existence. My current work balances direct observation with narrative imagination, capturing my own memories alongside the imagined histories of others. By rendering the small details we often rush past, I invite viewers to pause and re-engage with the world.
